TREATMENT IN A NUTSHELL
There are thousands of gay men living with HIV in Australia who are leading lives like many of the gay men who are HIV negative. It’s important to think about treatment because starting it earlier rather than later can optimise your long-term health.
We’re urging all gay men to get tested and if HIV-positive, to consult with their doctor about starting treatment. Treatment keeps your immune system healthy. It reduces the risk of developing health conditions associated with HIV. And treatments can lower the viral load of HIV in your blood to undetectable levels, meaning you’re much less likely to pass HIV on to sexual partners.
It’s estimated that less than 60% of diagnosed HIV-positive gay men are on treatment in Australia. We need to push that number up to 90% if we’re going to reach our goal of ending HIV. Recent developments in HIV treatments mean easier once-a-day dosing and fewer and less severe side effects, and there is mounting evidence that the earlier people with HIV begin treatment, the better the long term health outcomes. We need you, your partners and your mates to get on board as individuals and as a community.WHY TREATMENT IS KEYALL ABOUT TREATMENTBENEFITSNOT READY TO TREAT?CLINICS & GPsYOUR COMMITMENT
