Condoms continue to provide one of the most effective ways to prevent HIV and many STIs. Condoms are a cheap way to prevent the transmission of fluids passing from one partner to the other.

This makes anal sex using a condom and water-based or silicon-based lube safe for both the top and the bottom. If used properly, condoms are very reliable however, they can occasionally break or slip off. When fucking, it’s a good idea to check from time to time that the condom is on, there’s enough lube and that the condom isn’t ripped or torn.

Condoms come in a variety of sizes and shapes so it is important to work out the type that is best for you. Similarly, there are many types of water based or silicon based lubricants, so shop around for the one that you like best.

Condoms are widely available for purchase but are also available for free in many gay bars and sex on premises venues. For information on where to find free condoms click here, or contact your local AIDS Council or organisation for people living with HIV.
