#GiantCondom: Australia’s Largest Condom Has Arrived In Sydney!
Since 5am today, A massive 18-meter tall, bright pink condom has covered the iconic Sydney’s Hyde Park Obelisk as part of ACON’s I’M ON Campaign to help end HIV transmissions in NSW by 2020!
This installation was inspired by similar initiatives, which took place in Paris (Concorde’s Obelisk), and then in Buenos Aires a few years ago, generating a lot of buzz in each of these cities and triggering conversations around safe sex and condom use.
A bunch of sexy I’M ON brand ambassadors are onsite today and Saturday giving away condoms, answering questions about the campaign and promoting our #GiantCondom social media photo competition to help spread the word.
Why are we doing this?
Making sure condoms are top of mind among the gay community, especially in the lead up to World AIDS Day on December 1, is absolutely critical if we want to end the epidemic. We hope the giant condom will generate a lot of discussions, create lots of interest, turn lots of heads as well as raise a few eyebrows.
Our CEO Nicolas Parkhill says “while new drugs are starting to provide other means of protection against HIV, condoms remain central to the fight against HIV because they remain one of the most effective ways of preventing HIV transmission”.
“We won’t be able to achieve this goal unless gay men use condoms when they’re having high-risk sex with casual partners, particularly in situations where a partner’s HIV status isn’t known – it’s that simple,” he says.
