Keeping it Real with Condoms

Why use condoms?

Condoms are one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect yourself and your partners during sex. They:

  • Prevent HIV and other STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis.
  • Reduce the risk of unintended pregnancies.
  • Give peace of mind so you can enjoy your sex life safely and confidently.

Using condoms consistently and correctly is a simple way to take control of your sexual health.

Condoms are easy to find and use and can be found for free or relatively cheaply in stores everywhere.

Using a condom correctly

Using a condom correctly is important for it to work properly. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Check the package: Make sure it’s not expired, and the wrapper isn’t damaged.
  2. Open carefully: Tear the package along the edge. Don’t use teeth or sharp objects.
  3. Check the orientation: The rolled side should be on the outside.
  4. Pinch the tip: Squeeze the air out of the tip of the condom. Leave a little space at the tip to collect fluids.
  5. Roll it on: Roll the condom all the way down the shaft.
  6. Use lubricant if needed: Water-based or silicone lubricants help prevent tearing. Avoid oil-based lubricants like petroleum jelly – they can break latex.
  7. After ejaculation: Hold the base of the condom while pulling out to prevent slipping.
  8. Dispose safely: Wrap it in tissue or tie it up and throw it in the bin. Never flush condoms down the toilet.

More than it seems

Condoms often get a reputation for being boring, but there’s much more to them than just protection. When used correctly, condoms can enhance pleasure, add variety, and even make sex more playful and exciting. They’re not one-size-fits-all – different sizes, shapes, textures, and flavours allow you and your partner to explore what feels best.

Flexible use

Condoms aren’t just for penetrative sex – they can be used as part of foreplay, or in other sexual activities where protection is needed. They can also be used with your sex toys. This is especially helpful if you are wanting an easier clean-up!

Spice it up

Condoms can also be fun and playful. They come in different flavours like bubblegum, watermelon, or chocolate, and in textures like studded or ribbed to increase sensation. Explore these different options to spice up your sex life!

Check your fit

Condoms come in a range of sizes, shapes, and textures. Finding the right fit for you and/or your partner can make a huge difference in comfort, pleasure, and effectiveness. A better-fitting condom is less likely to slip off or break, giving you peace of mind while you enjoy yourself. You can learn how to find the perfect fitting condom to wear today!

What if my condom breaks during sex?

Sometimes, condoms can break during sex. If this happens, don’t panic – there are steps you can take to protect yourself.

  • Consider PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis): PEP is a 4-week course of HIV medication that can prevent HIV infection if started within 72 hours of potential exposure. You can learn more about accessing PEP here.
  • HIV testing: If more than 72 hours have passed since the break, book a HIV test to confirm your status. A follow-up test is recommended 3 months later to account for the HIV window period.
  • Support and advice: If you’re feeling anxious or have questions, you can speak to a sexual health nurse through the NSW Sexual Health Info Link on weekdays, 9 AM – 5:30 PM, at 1800 451 624.

Taking these steps quickly can help you stay informed, safe, and supported.
